    Students should apply their prior knowledge of addition and subtraction word problems from kindergarten and first grade to represent word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing using visual representations such as a strip diagram, a number bond, or an open number line where any of the terms may be missing or unknown.

Example

  • The shelter rescued 27 kittens in June. In July, 11 kittens were rescued. In August, 40 more were rescued. Draw a visual representation (picture or drawing) to represent the word problem, write a number sentence, and explain your thinking for each question below.

    a) How many kittens did the shelter rescue during those 3 months?

    b) If 64 of those kittens found homes by the end of August, how many still needed homes?
