T.I.P.S.

  • Lightbulb Students must be able to figure the volume of a rectangular prism when given the lengths of the sides, the number of unit cubes in the area of the base, and the number of layers in the prism.

Example

  • Jaime’s dad sells baseballs online. When he orders them, they come in a bucket. When he sells them, he puts them in boxes with dividers shaped like cubes to separate the baseballs. Then he puts 3 of those boxes in a case for shipping purposes. How many cubic units of baseballs can he put in one case?

TEKS

  •
5.6 Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to understand, recognize, and quantify volume. The student is expected to:

    (B) determine the volume of a rectangular prism with whole number side lengths in problems related to the number of layers times the number of unit cubes in the area of the base
