In Kindergarten

  • Previously in Kindergarten, students modeled the action of joining and separating, solved word problems using objects and drawings to find sums up to 10 and difference up to 10, and explained the strategies they used to solve problems within 10. Strategies included using spoken words, concrete and pictorial models, and number sentences.

In First Grade

  • First grade students generate and solve problems within 20 using basic fact strategies, concrete and pictorial models and number sentences.
     
    Students also determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation when the unknown can be any one of the three or four terms in a number sentence.

In Second Grade

  • Second grade students will solve one-step and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction within 1,000 using the strategies of place value, properties of operations, mental strategies.
     
    Students will also solve problems when given a mathematical number sentence involving addition and subtraction within 1,000.
     
    Students must also be able to recall the basic addition and subtraction facts within 20 with automaticity
     
    The beginning concepts of multiplication and division are introduced by modeling, creating, and describing contextual multiplication and division situations.
